An instruction permit is the first step in becoming a licensed Minnesota driver. The permit is valid for 2 years. Use this process to apply for a new permit if you have lost yours or to renew it. Start your new or renewal application online. A provisional license (step 2) is not required if you are 18 years of age or older.
See the Provisional License section (step 2). If you are 19 or older and have had your instruction permit for at least 3 months, apply for your driver's license for the first time. If you are 18 years old or younger and have had your instruction permit for at least 6 months, apply for your driver's license for the first time. If you want a license or identification of any kind, use the PRE-REQUEST option on the MN Driver & Vehicle Services website.
In Minnesota, both a driver's license and a state ID are legal IDs for financial transactions (banks, stores, etc.).
